Natasha Kaminsky
“It all starts with the song”
2008 looks to be a breakthrough year for NATASHA KAMINSKY, as her collaboration with international DJ and producer, MC Mario gains momentum. As of July 26th, “World Go Round” is heading into light-medium rotation on Galaxie’s Dance channel and the largest music service provider in Canada, Promo Only, has added the song to it’s August ‘Rhythm Radio’ compilation.
Lucky breaks are usually forged with a lot of hard work and this is no exception. Natasha has honed her craft for several years. She notes that “...once I let go and started writing music from a place of pure joy and total abandon…that’s when everything started to come together.”
In conjunction with promoting “World Go Round” to DJs nationwide, Natasha plans to release her sophomore album this fall. On this record, the Winnipeg-based songstress invites the listener out of the club and into her heart, where the tempo ranges from fast n’ furious to slow and seductive.
Natasha has clearly found her niche in electronic music. She asserts a delicate twist on the genre, with vocals reminiscent of Goldfrapp.
Counting influences as diverse as Peaches, Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, and the Bee Gees, Natasha creates a vibe that's warm and organic while maintaining an intense energy. “Being real is…the only way to be” she confides “even if it’s shining a light on a personal weakness or being more vulgar than my mother would approve of.” There is pleasurable nuance to her writing, should the listener care to dig.
"I usually write on my own, but some of the collaborations I've done lately are really fueling my creativity. It also helps keep my Attention Deficit Disorder from getting the better of me” she jokes.
Over the years, Natasha has developed several projects. She spearheaded the “River City Christmas” album – in which “Do The Snowflake” – a song she wrote, performed and produced – became a Top 20
hit on Mp3.com during the winter of 2001. “It’s a great dinner-party line to be able to say I had a ‘hit’ during the dot-com boom.” she laughs. The song was later included in the film “Seven Times Lucky” which screened at the Sundance Film Festival.
Along the way, Natasha has won numerous awards, including the UCLA Lionel Richie Scholarship in Songwriting, as well as being named runner-up in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.
Born to a French-Canadian mother, and a Polish-Ukrainian father, Natasha was raised with an equal footing in both national languages. Quebec listeners of “World Go Round” may notice her perfect accent when she sings “…at the top of the Tour Eiffel”. Natasha has enjoyed writting French material,
and garnered the CKSB Radio prize one year for best emerging Franco-Manitoban songwriter.
In 2003, after feeling disappointed and frustrated by the production quality of some her early demos, Natasha rented recording gear and enlisted pianist Rick Boughton to accompany her. These living room
recordings became her debut CD, ‘Essence’ which consisted of nothing more than a baby-grand piano as backdrop to Natasha's voice. Elegant in its simplicity, the album feels like a drawer full of love letters. It’s an intimate journey through another place, person and time and highlights Natasha’s increasing command of her craft.
When she isn't making music, Natasha enjoys raising monarch butterflies, working with power tools and watching funny stuff on YouTube.
